Ninth-inning rally comes up just short as the Ducks leave the tying and go-ahead runs on. @Gabe_Matthews3 goes 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored while @goldie623 finishes 3-for-3 with two doubles. #GoDucks pic.twitter.com/7InuXGeB7Q
- Oregon came up short in their late-inning rally against the Beavers in the first game of the season in the Civil War rivalry. SP Kolby Somers struggled mightily on the mound against the No. 3 ranked Beavers in Corvallis. Somers only completed two innings of work giving up 6 total runs on 5 hits, administering 3 walks and 4 K’s. It just wasn’t Somers’ day on the mound; he struggled with his command throughout the game throwing 3 wild-pitches in just two inning of work.
- Somers has had a rough start to 2019 with a 10.38 ERA and 2.20 WHIP in five appearances this season.
- Ducks’ 2B Max Foxcraft led the team with 2 RBI’s knocking in RF Jakob Goldfarb with a single to right field in the 3rd to give Oregon a 4-2 lead. Foxcraft later brought in 1B Gabe Matthews in the 5th on a sac-fly to center, bringing the Ducks within two of OSU, 7-5.
- The Ducks had a late-inning rally in them, but it wasn’t quite enough. Freshman Vinny Tosti brought Oregon within one hitting a single to center scoring Goldfarb for his second run scored of the game. OSU’s RP Jake Mulholland spoiled the Ducks’ comeback getting out of the 9th with Tosti in scoring position, earning the save and downing the Ducks 7-6.

- Oregon dropped the Pac-12 opener against Washington. Ducks’ head coach George Horton started five freshman for the third time this season with injuries to pitchers Kenyon Yovan, Cole Stringer, and catcher Cameron Campbell.
- Washington broke-open the game with five runs in the 5th inning. The Huskies tied the game up 3-3 on consecutive errors by RF Aaron Zavala and 3B Sam Novitske scoring C Nick Kahle. Huskies’ RF Connor Blair homered to right field scoring DH Joe Wainhouse as well for a 5-3 lead. CF Braiden Ward added a two RBI single up the middle to close out Washington’s five-run 5th inning to push the lead to 7-3.
- Zavala led the team going 1-3 with 2 RBI’s. Matthews also went 1-3, scoring 2 runs extending his hit streak to 12 games. Steer reached base safely twice to push his streak to 16 consecutive games.

- The wheels came off in game 2 against Washington. Oregon dropped its third-straight game in gruesome fashion giving up 19 runs. Neither pitching, nor batting were performing well back at PK Park.
- With an already thin pitching rotation without starters Yovan and Stringer due to injury, Sophomore Robert Alhstrom made his second start of the season for the Ducks. Alhmstrom and the rest of the Ducks’ pitching rotation struggled giving up the most runs in a single game this season. Five Huskies collected two or more RBI’s in probably the worst performance put together on a ball-field yet this season by the Ducks.
- It wasn’t just pitching that hindered Oregon. The strength of the Ducks lineup went hitless including, SS Spencer Steer (0-3), 1B Gabe Matthews (0-4), C/RF Jakob Goldfarb (0-3) and DH Aaron Zavala (0-3).
- Oregon pitching box score:
Alhmstrom, R. (L, 3-2) 4.0 IP, 6 ER, 7 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 5 K, 1 HBP
Chase, K. 1.1 IP, 1 ER, 2 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 K
Ciuffetelli, C. 0.2 IP 0 ER, 0 H, 2 BB, 0 K, 1 WP
Noble, J. 1.2 IP, 4 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 K

- Oregon snapped their three-game losing streak with a walk-off single to right field in extra innings by CF Jonny DeLuca.
- The Ducks got all the ugly out of their system on the mound in game 2 against Washington. Sophomore Brett Walker started the game for Oregon keeping the Huskies out of the scoring column for the better part of three innings allowing only five hits over 3.1 IP with 1 BB and 3 K’s. Junior right-hander Ryne Nelson came in early, in relief for Walker and HC Horton stuck with the hot-hand for nearly the rest of the game.
- Nelson was dominant over his 5.2 innings of work. He held Washington scoreless while on the mound, fanning 8 batters allowing only 3 hits. Walker and Nelson put together a strong 9 innings giving their batters a chance all game to take the lead. It just took till the bottom of the 10th. With the bases-loaded DeLuca came up big with the game-winning single bringing LF Taylor Adams across home and taking the final game of the series in extra innings

DUCK OF THE WEEK
Jonny DeLuca
Simply because of the walk-off hit to snap the three-game losing streak. While only batting .247 on the year, DeLuca is currently tied for third on the team with 9 RBI’s coming up clutch when it counts with runners on base and in scoring position.
