ATQ & A with Matchsticks and Gasoline

Who are they?

NHL: Anaheim Ducks at Calgary Flames Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

We were lucky enough to speak with Mike MacGillivray of Matchsticks & Gasoline (@MatchsticksCGY) before the Ducks’ big game against Calgary!

ATQ: What is the relationship between the Calgary Flames and the Anaheim Ducks? Is it bitter, friendly, non-existent?

M&G: The Flames and Ducks don’t get along too well. Despite Anaheim not having their best season, Calgary fans still love seeing them lose and don’t feel bad for them whatsoever.

ATQ: Are the Anaheim Ducks a good team?

M&G: Despite being in the bottom ¼ of the NHL, there is reason to believe they may not actually be all that bad. With some puck luck they may have been capable of jumping all the way up to being a bottom 1/3 team this year.

ATQ: Are the Calgary Flames a good team?

M&G: Despite being 3rd overall in the NHL, you have to look at how the Flames are 21 points behind the first place Tampa Bay Lightning, but only 20 points ahead of the 19th place Arizona Coyotes, so you tell me.

ATQ: After extensive research, we’ve discovered there’s a player on your team named Garnet Hathaway. Is he any good?

M&G: I mean he’s got to be. To become a hockey player and survive with a name like Garnet, he’s gotta be decently good right?

ATQ: Have you seen any of the Mighty Duck films? If so, rate them in order of importance.

M&G: D2, Original, D3 for me. The fact that Anaheim is no longer named the Mighty Ducks is a black mark on the history of the sport in my opinion.

ATQ: Give it to us straight, are the Anaheim Ducks going to win the Stanley Cup this year?

M&G: I give the Ducks a pretty good chance despite having fired their coach mid-season, having lost their starting goalie for a while, having limited offensive firepower, and being mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. Those are just minor hurdles everybody has to go through to win it all.

ATQ: Why is Hockey such an awesome sport?

M&G: You can get into a full-on bare knuckle fist fight with a guy and come back and play again 5 minutes later rather than going to jail.

ATQ: How far do you think the Flames will go in the playoffs?

M&G: Somewhere between the Cup and being eliminated in the first round. They’re currently on track to play the Avalanche in Round 1 and fire > snow so that’s a start.

ATQ: Score predictions?

M&G: Flames win 3-2 in a tight-checking game between teams that don’t like each other.
