The university and by default, Coach Cristobal has elected to give one year extensions (through the 2021 season) and raises for four coaches: Cornerbacks coach Donte Williams, Offensive Line coach Alex Mirabal, Special Teams coach Bobby Williams, and Safeties / AHC / Co-DC Keith Heyward, courtesy of The Oregonian

Keith Heyward

Title: Safeties / Associate Head Coach / Co-Defensive Coordinator

New Terms: THREE years for $1.8 million ($600,000 annually in base compensation plus the standard Oregon $125,000 in various incentives). Buyout is $120,000 prior to 1.31.2020 but it can be waived if he takes a HC or DC job with play calling duties.

Old Terms: TWO years for $900,000 ($450,000 annual base plus the $125,000 incentives)

Thoughts: Heyward was once thought to be a lock for the vacant DC job after former coordinator Jim Leavitt left the program but was “passed over” for new coach Andy Avalos. Coach Heyward previously expressed his disappointment but has been the good soldier. It was rumored that he was the DC in all but name only last season. He was given the title of Associate Head Coach and a raise of $150,000 to salve any wounded pride. Known as an recruiting ace and rising coaching superstar, he’ll get his shot at a solo DC title before too long. The playcalling duties has to be a legal caveat in part due to the infamous legal bungling of Texas vs. Oklahoma State for various offensive coaches during the Charlie Strong reign in Austin.

Alex Mirabal

Title: Offensive Line Coach

New Terms: THREE years for $1.05 million ($350,000 annually plus $125,000 incentives) Buyout: 25% of base salary ($87,500) if departing before 1.31.2020. Buyout waived if leaving for a FBS HC or OC job with play calling duties.

Old Terms: TWO years for $600,000 ($300,000 annual plus $125,000 incentives)

Thoughts: Coach Mirabal gets a $50,000 raise from his previous contract. Let’s just say that his position group needs to get a bit more consistent this upcoming season so that he earns that raise. The offensive line lacked any semblance of consistency once star sophomore Penei Sewell was injured. Let’s all hope for a better season, health and skill wise.

Bobby Williams

Title: Special Teams Coach

New Terms: THREE years for $1.05 million ($350,000 annually plus $125,000 incentives) Buyout: 25% of base salary ($87,500) if departing before 1.31.2020. Buyout waived if leaving for a FBS HC or coordinator job with play calling duties.

Old Terms: TWO years for $600,000 ($300,000 annual plus $125,000 incentives)

Thoughts: Like Coach Mirabal, Coach Williams got a $50,000 raise on his previous contract. Whether or not the raise is justified is a debate for another day given his group’s inconsistent performance last season. Williams probably won’t get another head coaching job so the clause is just there. He’s a great sounding board for Coach Cristobal as a person with prior HC experience so there’s that.

Donte Williams

Title: Cornerbacks Coach

New Terms: TWO years for $850,000 ($400,000 in 2019 and $450,000 in 2020 plus $125,000 incentives). Buyout: 25% of base salary ($100,000) if departing before 1.31.2020. Buyout waived if leaving for a FBS HC or coordinator job with play calling duties.

Old Terms: TWO years for $575,000 ($225,000 in 2018 and $350,000 in 2019 plus $125,000 in incentives).

Thoughts: Williams has more than earned his pay raise with the general improvement of his position group. He’s a rising star in the coaching ranks and was the lowest paid on the staff. He should get several looks for coordinator roles in a few years. Excellent recruiter.
