Record Night for Ionescu and Hebard in PAC-12 Opener, Ducks 104 - Buffs 46

Go Ducks!

NCAA Womens Basketball: Pac-12 Conference Tournament Oregon vs UCLA Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

EUGENE, OREGON - The #2 Oregon Ducks (11-1, 1-0) defeated the previously undefeated Colorado Buffaloes (12-1, 0-1) by a score of 104 to 46 at Matt Knight Arena.

Sabrina Ionescu tallied her 900th career assist and Hebard scored her 2,000th point.

1ST HALF - Colorado’s Jaylyn Sherrod hit the first shot of the game to give the Buffs their first and last lead of the game. Moments later, Ruthy Hebard cut the lead to one with a jumper which kick-started a 22-4 run by the Ducks. Oregon didn’t hit a three-pointer the entire first quarter, but they dominated in the paint and played ferocious defense which resulted in points on the fastbreak and a 15-point lead going into the second quarter.

The Ducks maintained their lead throughout the first portion of the second quarter, but when Hebard was benched after a technical given to both her and Mya Hollingshed the home team seemed to increase the offensive intensity. Erin Boley hit Oregon’s first triple with 6:37 left in the game and the Ducks outscored the Buffs 16 to 6 thanks to Sabrina Ionescu and Jaz Shelley hitting two triples each in the final three minutes of the half.

2ND HALF - Oregon didn’t miss a step after coming back from half time with a 51-22 lead. After Minyon Moore scored the first points of the second half on a jumper, Ruthy Hebard made program history by surpassing 2,000 career points with a putback. Colorado had no answers for the high-flying Ducks, as Oregon’s big three gave the crowd what they came for, as can be seen by Satou Sabally’s highlight below. Of course Sabrina couldn’t let Ruthy go in the record books alone, and so she recorded her 900th career assist on the final bucket of the quarter, a dish to Lydia Giomi to give Oregon an 82-35 lead. Ionescu is the 12th women’s player in NCAA history to hit the 900 assist mark.

Oregon’s bench got ample playing time in the fourth, and were even able to score 14 unanswered points before Lesila Finau’s triple ended the scoring streak with 34 seconds left in the game. Taylor Chavez looked especially sharp, hitting three triples in the final quarter.

Last season the Ducks beat the Buffs 102 to 43, so it appears we are on track for another spectacular season. Oregon will take on the Utah Utes (7-6, 0-2) this Sunday at 2 PM at Matt Knight Arena.
