Go Ducks!

Eugene, Oregon - The #14 Oregon Ducks (22-7, 11-5) earned sweet revenge against the Oregon State Beavers (15-13, 5-11) in a 69-to-54 victory in front of 10,098 at Matt Knight.

1ST HALF: The Ducks and Beavers missed a combined six shots before Zach Reichle started the scoring with a three-pointer. Anthony Mathis earned the start due to Chris Duarte recovering from finger surgery on his shooting hand and Mathis came out hot by scoring Oregon’s first five points. Tres TInkle and Ethan Thompson reclaimed the lead off a couple of buckets, then the Ducks went on a 9-1 run that gave them a six-point lead at the 12:11 mark.

Oregon had opportunities to expand on their 14-8 lead, but neither team was able to hit a shot for over two minutes in the middle of the first half. Thompson hit a triple to cut the lead to three, then another two scoreless minutes later Addison Patterson made his first bucket of the game. Oregon State tied the game at 18 apiece with 5:04 left in the half, but Oregon was able to keep pace with their rival thanks to a pair of Mathis three-pointers, and finish with a 29-25 lead with a couple of last minute buckets in the paint by Chandler Lawson and Payton Pritchard.

2ND HALF: Coach Cristobal and the football team made an appearance at halftime, and Mario’s words seemed to pump up the basketball team, who had a stronger second half - though it started in much the same fashion. After nearly two minutes without a point, Will Richardson kicked off the scoring with a triple that put the Ducks up by seven. Payton Pritchard hit a pair of jumpers to maintain Oregon’s momentum, then a bucket by Richardson gave the Ducks their first double-digit lead of the game.

Richardson’s jumper at 15:41 sparked a 9-0 run from Oregon that ended with a Pritchard triple that got the crowd on their feet, a Tres Tinkle free throw ended Oregon State’s scoring drought, but after Tinkle missed his second shot from the charity stripe Pritchard drained another triple to go up by 19, then Richardson piled on with a three-pointer of his own. The teams then traded short runs - the Beavers went 6-0, then the Ducks went 7-0, then the Beavers went 7-0 - until the final six minutes of play where Altman’s squad used their healthy lead to coast to a crucial Civil War victory.

Oregon’s low shooting percentage of 41.3 from the floor was a bit concerning, and the absence of Chris Duarte is a huge loss, but there was still a lot of developments that bode well for the Ducks during this final stretch: Pritchard continued to play the best ball of his career, Will Richardson and Anthony Mathis scored a combined 28 points, Francis Okoro snatched six rebounds, N’Faly Dante made his return to the roster and Eddy Ionescu earned some playing time.

With UCLA’s thrilling last-second victory over Arizona State, the Ducks are now tied with the Bruins at the top of the PAC-12 standings and are guaranteed the 1-seed in the PAC-12 Tournament should they win their final two games of the season, both of which are at Matt Knight. Ducks face California on Thursday and then close out the regular season with Stanford. Oregon has not lost at home this season.
