There has been a lot of smoke regarding one Marcus Mariota and the Las Vegas Raiders
The #Raiders are pushing to close out a deal with QB Marcus Mariota, sources tell me and @RapSheet. Mike Mayock's No. 1-ranked QB in his @nflnetwork coverage leading up to the 2015 Draft could soon be on his roster.— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) March 17, 2020
It was clear from the moment that Mariota was benched by the Titans that he wasn't returning in 2020. It was made even more concrete when Ryan Tannehill signed a long term deal yesterday afternoon.
While Mariota's role in Sin City is still unclear, he would likely go in as a backup like Tannehill and usurp the starter's job should incumbent Derek Carr falter.
Mariota would instantly become among the best backup quarterbacks in the NFL like Teddy Bridgewater was last season for the Saints.
Maybe he has a career renaissance under Jon Gruden. Maybe the NFL spotlight is too bright as a starter and he's a backup at best.
Las Vegas is an interesting fit for him roster wise as there are unproven weapons around the QB. They do have assets at TE with breakout veteran Darren Waller and a young star RB in Josh Jacobs. Not to mention reliable receiver Hunter Renfrow but its clear that the Raiders need more weapons.
The GM, Mike Mayock loved Mariota during his draft year FWIW. I'm not sure if Gruden and Mariota are system fits, much less personality wise.
There's some doubt that Mariota would fit the glitz and glamour of the Vegas lifestyle as well. There's something to be said about quarterbacks that need to fit the big city mentality. He's definitely not that.
What do you think, Ducks fans?
