Some head coaches have particular identities. Chip Kelly was an offensive-minded guy. Everyone knew he called the plays at Oregon, it was his offense. Yet we heaped praise on Helfrich and eventually elevated him as head coach. Unfortunately he was just "along for the ride," and without Chip it became evident over time that Mark Helfrich wasn't what made Oregon's offense special.
Enter Lanning. Although he has been great as defensive coordinator for the Bulldogs, he coached for Kriby Smart and had Will Muschamp assisting him. Both those men have quality defensive acumen. Could we be making the same mistake here in believing that the sitting coordinator is what is making Georgia's defense play so well?
I guess we'll find out in about 9 months...
