It was an exciting homecoming weekend in Oregon athletics for the most part, although Oregon soccer did its best to diminish that. Fortunately, they were away from Eugene and unable to cast their cloud of ineptitude over the throngs of alumni that had descended on Eugene.
Speaking of dissension, the winless Ducks lost both their games to Cal and Stanford by a combined score of 1-10.
In an 8-1 demolition against Cal, Oregon at least managed to tack a goal on as freshman Mya Schneider scored in the 81st minute. The prior 60 minutes were simply a bombardment by the Golden Bears as Cal tallied goals in the 22nd, 25th, 27th, 33rd, 35th, 44th, 56th, and 74th minutes. Unfortunately, there was no mercy rule like in Softball to spare Oregon.
Following that performance, it may well have been reasonable to assume the #5 Stanford Cardinal would hand Oregon an even more embarrassing defeat. Fortunately, the Ducks weren’t quite so porous as sophomore Maddy Goldberg made 15 saves, eight of which would have been quite useful a few days prior.
Still, the Cardinal won 2-0 as even in a largely liberal area the Ducks couldn’t muster up anything offensive. Stanford had 27 shots to Oregon’s seven, and 17 corner kicks to Oregon’s three.
If you’d like to see something truly horrifying as Halloween approaches, Soccer will be playing at Pape Field this weekend against the Washington schools.
