Oregon turned the ball over 20 times but overcame their miscues en route to a 56-43 win.

The Nevada Wolfpack was in town for the Ducks’ final non conference game and they brought with them a hard nosed, physical defense that seemed to frustrate a young Oregon team early limiting them to 25 points on only 8-23 shooting. Tony Woods lead all scorers with 13 and added 6 boards and a trio of blocks for Oregon. Coach Altman had praise for his own defense and Center Tony Woods as they stifled the Wolfpack "I like our effort defensively. I think Tony inside with the blocks and changing a lot of shots I think [he] did some good things. I thought for a long time there we were defensively pretty sharp." The Ducks never trailed in the game en route to a 56-43 victory. The Wolfpack had 3 players in double figures, lead by Deonte Burton with 12 in a losing effort.

Both teams struggled offensively in an ugly first half with the Wolf Pack shooting 19% from the field and the Ducks committing 12 turnovers. The turnovers were a credit to a physical defensive attack from Nevada who were aggressive in the passing lanes and capitalized on Oregon mistakes. Of the 14 points Nevada tallied, 1o of them came as a direct result of Oregon turnovers. It was the lowest point output for both the Ducks and their opponent to this point in the season as they went into the break with Oregon leading 25-14. EJ Singler lead the scoring for both sides with 6 on the strength of two three pointers but did not score in the second half.

The Ducks were without the services of Arsalan Kazemi in the second half as he went out with a head injury when he and team mate Carlos Emory collided. His status is unclear for the future but both Singler and Altman described his demeanor as "Okay," after the game. The Ducks however would gather themselves and jump out with an 11-2 run that gave them a 19 point lead early in the half. "I really liked the way we started the second half, made three really good plays for each other…three assisted baskets." The Wolfpack also started to heat up in the second as they responded to the Oregon run with a run of their own, cutting their deficit to 6 at the midway point of the half. The Ducks would respond again with back to back three pointers to double their lead and regain control of the game. From that point, Nevada never got back within double figures as the Ducks eventually won by 13.Coach Altman also was pleased with the assist to basket ratio of Oregon as they tallied 14 assists on only 17 baskets.

The Ducks continue to be fraught with turnovers as they committed 20 in the game, which lead to 20 Nevada points. Coach Altman feels that the team is "not making simple plays…we’re not making good decisions [and] are making the game much more difficult than it has to be on the offensive end." EJ Singler commented after the game that he takes a lot of the blame, committing 7 of the turnovers himself. Despite that The Ducks garnered their 16th consecutive home win which gives them the 7th longest streak in the nation. The Ducks face off their rival in Oregon State at Gill Colesium next and EJ Singler noted, looking forward "It’s going to be a big game. They’re really good at home. We’re going to need to bring our best game to win there."

Kazemi was injured late in the first half of Oregon's game with Nevada after taking an elbow to the head from teammate Carlos Emory.

UPDATE: Kazemi will not return and is suffering from concussion-like symptoms.

Oregon Ducks senior forward Arsalan Kazemi left Oregon's game against Nevada with three minutes to go in the first half after taking an elbow to the head with about three minutes to go in the first half. Kazemi, a transfer from Rice, took an elbow from teammate Carlos Emory as both were going for a rebound. Kazemi was down on the court for several minutes, and appeared to be rubbing his temple. After getting up, he was taken immediately to the locker room. After such a blow, a concussion has to be the immediate concern.

Kazemi has been a big cog for the 10-2 Ducks, averaging 9.2 points and 10.4 rebounds per game since becoming eligible in Oregon's third game of the season. Kazemi had two points and four rebounds at the half of Oregon's game with Nevada. The Ducks hold a 25-14 halftime lead. It is unknown whether Kazemi will return for the second half.

The Ducks close out the non-conference schedule with a New Year's Eve visit from Nevada.

The Oregon Ducks Men's Basketball squad takes the floor Monday for their final non-conference game, an afternoon tilt with the Nevada Wolf Pack. Nevada (9-4) is riding a five-game winning streak, and already have a win in a Pac-12 building this season, beating Washington, 76-73, in Seattle on Dec. 8. However, they have dropped their other road games on the season: at Marshall and at Pacific, and have no other real wins of note on the schedule this season. Oregon rebounded from a disappointing triple-overtime loss at UTEP by pounding Houston Baptist, 91-50, in Eugene before Christmas.

The Wolf Pack have two big scorering guards that you really have to watch out for. Malik Story is a 6'5" guard who does pretty much everything well offensively. He averages 17.3 points per game. While his overall shooting percentage is a bit low at 43%, he shoots the ball well from deep (37%), and from the charity stripe (77%), and also pulls down nearly four boards a game. He's complimented by 6'1" point guard Deonte Burton, who averages 16.0 points per game. Burton isn't the three point shooter that Story is (31%), but is a better finisher and has a better FG% overall (48%). Burton went for 29 points and six steals against Washington earlier in the season.

The front line is has some size, but is not imposing. 6'10" DeVonte Elliott , 6'8" Cole Huff, 6'9" Kevin Panzer, and 6'8" Jerry Evans, Jr. provide some nice depth, but statistically all give you the same thing--7-8 points per game, and 4-5 rebounds. Its a nice front court, but one that Oregon better be able to handle by this point in the season.

Nevada, in some ways, has a similar statistical profile to Oregon. The Wolf Pack want to get the pace up a bit (Nevada averages 75 points per game to Oregon's 79). Neither team shoots the ball from deep terribly well (both at 32%). The big advantage for the Ducks is that they are the far superior rebounding team. Oregon, thanks in large part to Arsalan Kazemi, get an offensive rebound on nearly 41% of their misses, one of the highest rates in the country. Nevada is a full ten percentage points lower. The Ducks also clean up on the defensive glass nearly 73% of the time, with Nevada down at 68%. Oregon has been the best rebounding team in the conference, and that fact has been the team's biggest advantage this season.

The job for Oregon in this game is twofold. First, they have to exert their will on the glass against an average rebounding team. Secondly, they need to contain one of the two guards. If they can take one of those guys out of the game, you're making the Nevada offense awfully one dimensional. Given how much they struggle with the outside shot, I would expect that Dana Altman will go with the zone very early in this one.

This is a game that Oregon should win, especially at home. A victory would move the Ducks to 11-2 to end non-conference play, a mark that would have to be considered successful. However, as their victory against Washington showed, they are a dangerous team that can get you if you don't give them your best effort.
